Lighting Masterplan Potsdam
Due to EU lamp bans and legislative changes in the field of environmental and immission control, I am developing a new master lighting plan for public street lighting for the state capital of Potsdam. To continue ensuring traffic safety while better avoiding unnecessary light pollution in the future, the revision follows the guiding principle:
“As much light as necessary and as little as possible — and all of it exactly where it is needed.”
The revision is being carried out with the involvement of Potsdam’s residents. The process is documented in detail on Potsdam’s participation website.
public participation process
Phase I
In the first phase of participation, the residents of Potsdam were invited to identify locations where public lighting could be improved. More than 300 submissions regarding Potsdam’s lighting were received during the participation process. At the same time, information about the historical and current lighting situation in Potsdam was provided online and as part of the special exhibition “Licht AN” at the Potsdam Museum.
Phase II
In the second phase, the submitted locations are being evaluated and assessed according to their short-, medium-, and long-term implementability using a traffic light rating system. The results will be documented as part of the master lighting plan.
To further raise awareness among Potsdam’s residents about the effects of light pollution, a local project on the illumination of cultural sites will be carried out within the framework of the Art of Darkness project, with active public participation.
